What's New at the Barn:

EAT LOCAL!
It's the
season for farmers' markets! Don't miss out on all the "good
stuff" this summer season. When you buy fresh locally, you support local
farmers and reduce your carbon footprint -- how cool is that? Our
young farmers are eating and cooking fresh from the HealthBarn
USA garden every week with yummy asparagus, spinach, kale,
salad greens, Egyptian onions and a ton of herbs! We just
harvested fragrant chamomile flowers to dry so we can make herbal tea
to help us sleep better! Not sure what's locally available in your state, click here and use this great Web site to find out.
Be
adventurous and join a local CSA. What is a CSA? According
to the USDA, Community Supported Agriculture consists of a community
of individuals who pledge support to a farm operation so that the
farmland becomes, either legally or spiritually, the community's
farm, with the growers and consumers providing mutual support and
sharing the risks and benefits of food production.
A CSA
season typically runs from late spring through early fall. The
number of CSAs in the United States was estimated at 50 in 1990, and
has since grown to over 1000. To learn more about a CSA in
your state or nearby town, click here for more information.
If
you are not ready for the CSA endeavor this year, shop the
local farmers' markets bursting with fresh produce, herbs, homemade
baked goods and much more! Click here to
locate a farmers' market nearby. If you are in New Jersey, check out Abma's Farm Market where the family sells a variety of fresh produce and strawberries; and if you are in Westchester, the Hilltop Hanover Farm's u-pick and farm stand are open and selling out of beautiful organic produce.

it's the ultimate "farm-to-fork" experience! HealthBarn USA is
the only farm summer camp program in Bergen County, NJ at Abma's Farm for children,
ages 5-12; and now in Westchester, NY at Hilltop Hanover Farm & Environmental Center. During the day from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. campers
indulge in delicious, nutritious food and the healthy lifestyle that
goes with it! They are active by rotating between growing,

vegetables, learning about nutrition and environmental science through
games and enjoying activities in creative arts and crafts, nature, yoga
